Depending on your preference, there are many different ways to house potted herbs. You can use a standing or vertical planter, or a wooden box.
Placement of your potted herbs is important. Herbs tend to like full sun or partial shade; if your home faces North or North-west, they’ll get some good sun. It’ll be evident if your herbs are not getting enough sun as they will start to grow and ‘pull’ in the direction of the light. Before purchasing potted herbs, do some research on the care that different types of herbs require.
Herbs don’t need to be fed with plant fertiliser all the time, in fact, you can give them a fertiliser boost once a year and they’ll be fine. Consider adding nutrients to the soil by scattering compostable scraps or organic matter in the pots – for example, crushed eggshells are good for adding nitrogen to the soil.
Potted herbs are different to herbs which grow in a garden bed and therefore are more sensitive to the soil conditions. Herbs should be planted in pots which allow excess water to drain; pots with holes in the bottom are best and also elevating your pots (like in a planter) will allow them to drain freely.
Herbs need to be trimmed or pruned, to encourage growth. It is best to prune your herbs on a sunny day before noon. Parsley and coriander must be pruned from the base (about an inch above the soil) with a pair of long nose scissors, or a sharp knife. Mint needs to be pinched with clean fingers – pinch the top 2 inches off any new shoots. It’s best to harvest herbs in the early morning or late afternoon and also before flowering season as this ensures the best flavour. It is also recommended that blooms be cut off the plant in order to encourage growth and strength, as well as to stop seeding.
Having access to fresh herbs is a fantastic way to save money (as store-bought herbs can be costly and have a limited shelf life) and to add a punch of flavour to your meals. Herbs can grow well in pots if they are properly cared for. Potted herbs do not require a lot space and are therefore suitable to grow on your patio at Pebble Beach.

Interestingly, a horse-riding ring existed where the pool now is, hence why the pool has its now iconic oval shape. Italian influence
If you’ve been watching The Block, you’ll know that Terrazzo is making big waves. From floor tiles to back splashes to bathroom finishes, Terrazzo is becoming a trendy look for homes. Originally a type of flooring from Venice, Terrazzo is made up of chips of granite, glass, marble and other iridescent materials which are set into a composite to create a tile. This style has now moved away from hard surfaces and floors and into wall finishes like wallpaper and feature walls.
Green is the new black
Greenery never goes out of fashion and large indoor plants add drama and depth to a space without having to do very much. Bare walls can be dressed up with long, slimline, potted plants which also add height and help in resolving a space. The beauty about using plants as decorative features is that they are not permanent fixtures and can be moved around or replaced cheaply and easily. Large Ficus varietals are perennially popular and suited to indoor conditions. These varietals include the Fiddle Leaf (Ficus Lyrata), Rubber Plant (Ficus Elastica) and Ficus Alii (Ficus Maclellandii). With a global movement to stay at home becoming more popular, people are opting for textures and fabrics which are soft to the touch. Hard floors are being covered with large carpets and rugs in tribal patterns and shapes. Muted and neutral shag pile carpets are ideal for bedroom spaces and underneath beds to add texture and form to a space.
Scatters are not only for seating
One of the unsung heroes of the décor world has to be the scatter cushion. The scatter makes a living space look welcoming and resolved but not austere. A bold move is to use mismatched scatters or to mix fabrics like velvets and tweeds, or faux fur and mock reptile-print vinyl. One of the newer trends seen on beds is to have scatters of different shapes and heights. The aim is to move away from obsessive symmetry in the bedroom, to a more relaxed and welcoming feel. Aim to create width with scatters on a bed, as opposed to depth – stacking too many (one in front of another) will make the bed look smaller.
Chanel inspired
Black and white screams Parisian chic, but it’s not just as simple as black and white. Consider choosing a tint that is a few shades darker than white on the colour spectrum and pair it with a tone that is not a true black. The aim is to create a tasteful contrast not a chessboard effect. If you’re into a monochromatic look, be mindful not to simply choose everything in one colour, rather opt for shades that are on the same spectrum. True white or bright white is not often found in nature so opt for something softer. For example, Ivory and Sea Salt are on the same colour spectrum but are not the same colour yet when they are paired together, they create a ‘monochromatic’ look. The Boho look is about softness, think folds of fabric, natural fibres and materials and pared-down colours. Boho works best when combined with ultra-modern elements like matte black sanware, sleek brushed aluminium handles and geometric shapes. For example, a rattan weave chair in an updated shape looks on-trend without being stark while a macramé wall hanging against a bold feature wall makes an impact without being in your face.
Champions of industry
The industrial look never really disappeared; it just grew up a bit. Hard metals are one of the steadfast elements of this trend. While not all spaces are suited to exposed copper piping and raw brick walls, industrial elements are introduced through sanware (again, matte black taps), gold (hard-edged gilt-lined mirrors) and a touch of Scandi (or Scandinavian) styling.

It’s time we change our thinking about these ocean predator and stepped up to try and protect them as much as we can. Right now, the biggest threat to their existence is us; and we depend on them to survive more than we may know
Humans are more of a threat to sharks than sharks are to humans. Here’s the really scary bit, fisheries and trawler fishing nets remove about 100 million sharks from our oceans annually. And we need sharks, we really do- the health of our oceans is dependent on them playing their role in the oceanic ecosystem. Sharks truly demonstrate the old wisdom of ‘the survival of the fittest’ by preying on the ocean’s most vulnerable, weak and diseased. By preying on the weakest, they are removing them from the gene pool thereby helping to strengthen fish stocks and oceanic environments. They act like the genetic cleaners of the seas because they consume the dead, the dying, the weak and the injured therefore leaving the strongest and healthiest marine life to continue. Genetically this means that the weaker gene pools are being taken out of the equation and the stronger ones are being passed on thereby becoming stronger, more robust, adaptive and healthier.
Removing sharks altogether would be an unspeakable environmental catastrophe -as it is 100 million sharks are lost annually as a result of human activity, more specifically through mass fishing. Many studies are saying that the ultimate decimation of sharks would have such a great knock-on effect that it would alter our very existence as humans. If that is not a wake-up call, then I don’t know what is. By altering the balance of the oceans, we will in turn affect the air that we breathe- as up to 80% of the air we breathe comes from the oceans. You tip the scales one way and we will feel it.
Globally, 11000 sharks are being killed every hour: that’s 3 sharks every second. That is huge and it’s due to humans. Fishing records report that today over 90% of sharks have been severely depleted and over 33% of all large sharks (yes, Great Whites) have been wiped out.
We need to rethink the way we think about sharks, if not just for the sake our very existence
Sharks are a valuable part of the ecosystem and their existence is crucial to keeping it in balance. Statistically the number of shark attacks are low- more people are killed by car-related deaths annually.
If we are going to save our seas and ourselves, then we need to change our relationship with sharks. I know many of us cant even begin to think about a ‘relationship’ with these savage predators, but herein lies the rub: it’s our thinking that’s the problem. Blame Hollywood, blame your relatives, blame hearsay but most of what we, the average person, know about sharks is possibly wrong. How many of us can name more than 3 species of shark? How many of us truly understand shark behaviour? How many of us can say we know for sure why sharks may attack humans in the ocean? Not many of us, that’s for certain.
These creatures are certainly beguiling; they have pretty complex social systems; some migrate hundreds of thousands of miles and some species have yet to be seen giving birth. Most of what we know is based on rumour and it’s time we separate the fact from fiction. Let’s look at the facts on shark attacks globally. In 2019 there were 64 confirmed unprovoked attacks, which statistically was lower than the average for the last 5 years. Furthermore, of those 64 attacks, only 5 were fatal, and 3 out of the 5 attacks were provoked. That means us humans made ourselves vulnerable to attack0 that could be chumming the water to attract sharks, spearfishing or even intentionally touching or prodding them in the wild.
If we compare the annual fatalities to motor vehicle-related deaths the difference is staggering: 1.35 million people are killed, on average annually. But that wouldn’t stop most of us getting into a car and you’ll likely never hear people spreading rumours about what causes a fatality in this regard. Here we tend to stick to the facts; wearing a seatbelt can help save your life, a vehicle with airbags is good and we must look left and right before we cross a street. So why can we apply the same logic to sharks? There’s a whole heap of fact out there about these creatures so let’s rather lean on that.
